My proposed curation format and theme is called A Collection of Kdrama's
(Meaning Korean Drama). It is rather broad genre within Korean television. Don't get me wrong, I can't speak Korean (albeit I'm trying) and so I watch these shows with subtitles. I know some people are on the fence about reading subtitles during a film or television show as arguably you can miss 'moments', but in my opinion, that is no excuse to not at least giving it a go!
A little while back I was scrolling through Netflix and found an interesting TV show, I read the synopsis (completely unaware at this point that it was in a foreign language), and it seemed like something I'd be into. Obviously at about 10 seconds in I realised this wasn’t in English, and at first it was a bit strange - definitely different to the shows I usually watch. But after I finished a few episodes, I was absolutely HOOKED! The plot line was great, the script, the actors, the set, the entire production blew me away. From then on, I could officially say I was obsessed with Kdrama. Coming from a European family and having being influenced by mostly European people my whole life, pretty much everyone I speak to about Kdrama thinks I’m crazy. I don’t know, I guess because it’s something foreign and often people shun it before they try it, but a year and a half ago I had no real knowledge about the difference between the different Asian cultures. We all think they look the same, so aren't they then all the same? Heck no! That's what I want people to understand and learn from reading this. I think it's so so important, especially in the extremely multicultural city we live in, to have some understanding about the different kinds of people we walk past every day.
Different cultures have different types of television. Latin America are known for their telenovela's, which when I watch them I find strange, however the culture in the country that it's been made for, may be different to my own - so why should their TV be any different? If the culture, people and environment are not the same as my own country, then I shouldn't assume their television and films will be produced in the same way. This is why I find Kdrama so interesting and curious to watch. I'm not only watching something entertaining, I'm also learning about the customs and language of another culture and personally I believe that is extremely important if I want to respect the different people around me. Before I get off track, each of the television shows I curate will fall within this theme and genre, but they will also each have their own unique flare as well as I want to attract a wide audience. I want to start educating people on a culture I really knew nothing about before I started watching these shows. I hope people who watch any of the items on the list gain a greater knowledge for not only Korean language and culture but also all other Asian cultures as well.
